Music Production at a Glance

Music is really fun. Singing/Playing/Performing music can be daunting. But what about creating music? At one time, music production tools were the realm of large corporations, and you need access to a studio to create any sort of music. Today, everyone, even you, can create music.

Assignment

Today you will explore Chrome Music Lab. Ultimately, I want you to create a piece of music of your own using song maker, but you are welcome to play around within each experiment, and collaborate with each other. There are 14 experiments that you have access to. I have listed the ones that you will likely find the most interesting below in an order that you may find useful.

Interesting Experiments

1. Piano Roll
   If you’ve never seen a self playing piano, this is the sort of “program” that we would feed into the piano to play. This is an example of the sort of thing that you could make as a part of this assignment.
2. Melody Maker
   Create a melody by placing notes in the grid
3. Shared Piano
   In this experiment you can play around on the piano, and create music by yourself or with each other. Create a room (top right), copy the link (bottom left) and send it to a friend to create music together
4. Rhythm
   Play around with simple rhythms. Make the animals play different percussion instruments
5. Oscillators
   If you want to know how computers make music, play around with different oscillator shapes and see how they sound. By mixing these sounds, we are able to create digital music by programming it.

Song Maker

This is your main assignment for today. Create music by placing notes and percussion in the appropriate place.
I would like you to try your hand at creating something that takes up at least 16 beats. You will have this period and next (Monday) to do this.
